HKG New Airport

New Hong Kong International Airport

HKG New Airport
The New Hong Kong International Airport

1. Project Brief
The provision of the new international airport, which replaced the former Kai Tak airport, satisfies the objectives of maintaining the prosperity of Hong Kong and in playing a key role as the hub of China, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim economic zone.

The airport is the central project of the 10-project Airport Core Programme (ACP), a part of the overall development plan of Hong Kong into the 21st century.

The new airport was built partly on a small island known as Chek Lap Kok, combined with land reclaimed from the sea off the northwest coast of Lantau, the largest island in Hong Kong, approximately 30 km from the centre of Hong Kong.

Following the completion of the site formation work in mid-1996, the airport construction was carried out in phases, with the initial runway opening in 1998 and a second runway opening in 1999.

Upon its final completion, the airport will become one of the largest international airports in the world with an annual capacity of 87 million passengers (departure and arrival), 9 million tonnes of air cargo and 360 thousand aircraft movements (takeoffs and landings).

Nishimatsu successfully participated in the construction of one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken in Hong Kong. Our involvement in this project commenced in 1992 and continued until the opening of the new airport in July 1998. We were responsible for the execution of the following contracts:-

  • C201 - Site preparation at Chep Lap Kok (1248ha, 1992-1996)
  • C301 - Passenger terminal foundations (18ha, 1994-1995)
  • C940/L01 - Operation of Rock crushing facility (8M ton, 1994-1997)
  • C535 - Sea Water Pumphouse (North) (1995-1997)
  • C410 - Landside Infrastructure (Highways and utilities, 1995-1998)
  • C420 - Ground Transportation Center (MTRC, Highways and Utilities, 1996-1998)
2. Rapid Excavation by Large-Scale Blasting
In the airport platform site preparation, Nishimatsu carried out a huge volume of hard rock excavation (65 million m3) in only 28 months by making full use of the following technologies:
- Drilling by down-the-hole hammer with large diameter
- Using emulsion explosives as a countermeasure to rainfall or groundwater
- Using Nonel blasting system for safety

3. International Joint Venture
For the airport platform site preparation, Nishimatsu served as the leader of the international joint venture formed with 6 companies, including Costain (U.K.), Morrison Knudsen (U.S.), Ballast Nedam (Dutch), Jan De Nul (Belgium), China Harbour Engineering (China) and Nishimatsu. Nishimatsu has formed many international joint ventures with many overseas companies up until now, resulting in the successful completion of many overseas projects. As is the case in other successful projects, Nishimatsu shared its cutting-edge technology and superior management resources with its partners in this project.
